        South Indian tea output down 9%

        KOCHI:  Prices of south Indian tea are likely to rise with production dropping by almost 9% in the first three months of 2007.

        According to figures released by the United Planters Association of South India (Upasi), the production has dropped in estates of Kerala and Tamil Nadu while in Karnataka there is a marginal increase when compared to production figures of the same period in 2006. The total production for January-March 2007 stood at 42,422 tonne compared to 46,340 tonne for the same period in 2006. For the month of March alone, the production stood at 15,596 tonne compared to 18,018 tonne in 2006.Severe drought conditions in the beginning of the year are the reason for the crop loss.
